RIVER VERDON - Racing Champion from Hong Kong

Posted by Steve Pegg on Thursday, June 04, 2015

We're back to show you a racing horse mount we completed back in 2005.

RIVER VERDON (1987 - 2005) One of Hong Kong's top racing horses, River Verdon remains the only winner, to date, of the middle distance Hong Kong Triple Crown. His wins spanned six seasons (1990 - 1996) and included no fewer than four Champions and Chater Cups and two Hong Kong Gold Cups. A Hong Kong Derby winner and by definition the best of his generation, he also did Hong Kong proud by winning the 1991 Hong Kong Invitation Cup (now called the Hong Kong Cup) defeating runners from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. Read more of RIVER VERDON'S story.

After enjoying retirement in Australia, RIVER VERDON passed away in 2005. SP Taxidermy were commissioned by his owner, The Hon Ronald Arculli, to preserve him for racing fans in Hong Kong to remember. SPT started by skinning the horse, tanning the hide and preserving the skeleton. We then begun the process of sculpting the anatomy and constructing a fibreglass body on top. The tanned skin was then mounted over the body of the completed specimen before the champion racehorse was taken back to Hong Kong in 2006. The work is now on display at Sha Tin Racecourse.
