QUARANTINE
With the seasonal outbreaks of serious agricultural infections around the world, there have been some major changes in the way in which raw skins, dairy products, plants and grain are able to be imported into Australia.
With the devastation of livestock through the spread and contraction of Foot and Mouth Disease ( FMD ) in late 1999, and the outbreak of bird flu throughout parts of Asia , Australia has revised the procedures in which animal products are imported into this country. This was taken as a measure to protect our vital agricultural industries against the effects of FMD and other devastating diseases and exotic pests.
It is now a requirement of Federal Law that any item to be imported and that is subject to Quarantine procedures, must first be issued with an Import Certificate as issued by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, or AQIS, as it is more commonly referred to.
Any importation of the nature of raw animal trophies will be subject to inspection and assessment by officers of AQIS prior to ordering in for treatment at an approved quarantine treatment facility. Any such importation must satisfy the barrier conditions as specified on the importation permit, which amongst others, requires consignments of hunting trophies to be accompanied with an official government veterinary certificate from the country of origin stating the species and country of origin of the skins/hides.
For any such hunter who believes that this requirement cannot be adequately fulfilled due to the remoteness of the game and the distances to known settlements containing a Government Veterinarian, clarification should be sought about suitable alternatives with AQIS prior to the importation of animal products.
South Pacific Taxidermy is an approved quarantine treatment facility under the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry for the treatment of animal products and game trophies entering Australia.
As such, we are able to assist individuals in the lodgement of application forms through AQIS for the importation of international consignments of trophies.
